Not just a diet book. Not just a cookbook. You’ll love this one!, March 28, 2015

Paleo is in! I’ve read several books about Paleo diets and recipes in the past few months. I’ll admit that I’ve enjoyed many of them. But some of those books seemed to ignore the real background of Paleo diets – the non-processed, simple foods available to men during the Paleolithic period. That was the Stone Age, the time of cavemen. It was a pre-agricultural, nomadic, gathering and hunting period for mankind. They didn’t even have domesticated animals like we have today. My point is this: some of the ingredients included in many of the books on this subject were not available to people in that period. Why use the term if you are going ignore its meaning!
Okay. Now that I’ve finished my rant, I can tell you about this exceptional book. I’ll immediately grant you that the author is a highly trained nutritionist and practitioner of functional medicine. She has much better credentials than any caveman, but she does appreciate the value of the whole, unprocessed foods and the simple ingredients commonly available in that time. She also understands the biological mechanisms that make Paleo foods healthier for us. Furthermore, she has both personally and professionally seen the benefits of eating the way she describes in the book.
We have advantages that cavemen didn’t. A caveman just ate whatever he had. No Snickers bars! No refined sugars or flour for that matter. The meat he ate was not grain fed; it came from what we call free range animals. We have broader and more consistently available supplies of food, but not all suited to the health and energy needs of our bodies. As a result, many of the calories we consume are stored as fat.
The book is well-structured and well-written. I didn’t notice any formatting, spelling, or grammatical errors. The introductory material was very informative about the genetic and dietary basis for weight loss.
This author explains the foundations of her diet plan before launching into a substantial list of recipes – 365! These are delicious combinations that are set to give you a satisfying meal so that you don’t feel deprived. Since she understands food addiction and cravings, these foods include the variety of flavors that will keep you onboard with the plan. No single caveman would have had this luxury, but these foods would have been available somewhere in the world in that time. Let’s remember, you don’t have to search any further than your local market for your food. Those guys spent most of their time looking for theirs! They would have loved to eat these meals! You will too!

This is a great book for anyone who is interested in learning more about the Paleo lifestyle, and who would like to learn about the many different recipes and the different benefits of the Paleo diet.

This book is by NO means a short read – if you’re looking for something light, this book will be great for you, since you can read each section as a standalone read. Or if you’re looking for a long read, it would also fit you, since there is SO much info inside. The book provides lots of information, and will be a valuable resource for ANYONE who is trying to find out more about the Paleo diet, particularly those who are interested in the Epigenetic side of the Paleo diet.

One thing that I loved about this book is that it provides information in a simple, yet effective manner that easily gets the necessary information across. There are literally HUNDREDS of different Paleo recipes that are provided in this book, along with lots of information and even a meal plan. Important information is highlighted in bold print, and everything that the author explains is just so easy to understand.

Overall, a very useful book for anyone who is interested in learning more about Paleo foods, and who are ready to make the changes that a Paleo diet calls for. I can only imagine the amount of time that the author put into creating this book, considering that there is just so much stuff inside that is actually useful!

What I found different about author Beran Parry’s Paleo Epigenetic Recipe Book is the inclusion of her personal story in the book along with some before and after pictures. Overall, the book is well written and easy to understand. I also liked the short summaries at the end of each chapter. Most of the 365 recipes included were straightforward and looked easy enough to prepare. I wished there had been a way to print out or download the 12 Week Plan in the back of the book in the Kindle version. I would certainly recommend this book because it’s different from the average book of its type I’ve found so far. Well done Beran!
